Available in multistage, liquid ring, and self-priming versions, centrifugal pumps are mechanical devices that use rotational energy from their impellers to move fluids throughout the pump system. As fluid enters the chamber, the impeller’s centrifugal force imparts velocity to the fluid and drives it towards the pump outlet, facilitating quick and easy fluid transport.

Positive Displacement Pumps
Positive displacement pumps are mechanical devices that are commonly found in the food and beverage industry. They operate by trapping a fixed amount of fluid and displacing it into the pump system’s discharge pipe. Since positive displacement pumps pulsate, their flow is cyclical and not a constant stream of fluid.

Valves are mechanical or electromechanical devices that regulate the flow of fluids (e.g., gases, liquids, fluidized solids, and slurries) by partially or fully opening and closing passages within fluid handling systems. Sanitary processing equipment requires the use of sanitary valves to remain in compliance with regulatory and industry standards.
In contrast to standard valves, sanitary valves are engineered for use in applications with high sanitation standards, such as cosmetics manufacturing, food and beverage processing, and pharmaceutical production operations. Their design and construction are such that they minimize the risk of the entrance and/or buildup of contaminants that may affect the quality of the process and products.
The German Food Processing Machinery and Packaging Machinery Association (VDMA) categorizes them into five classifications: Hygienic (I–III), Ultraclean (IV), and Aseptic (V). At the highest level (Aseptic), valves should feature a hermetic seal that separates the internal components from the external environment to lower the risk of contamination. Additionally, they should be able to withstand exposure to materials with a pH value of 4.5 or greater at ambient temperatures for several months.

In processing equipment, gaskets are compressible mechanical seals that prevent fluid from leaking into or out of the mating surfaces between components. They are available in a variety of materials, shapes, and sizes, all of which should be tailored to the requirements and restrictions of the application to ensure the formation of an adequate seal. Some of the key factors to keep in mind when designing or selecting a gasket for process equipment are process material characteristics (acidic vs. basic, temperature, pressure, etc.), operating conditions and limits, curing method, and regulatory and industry requirements.

Fittings are used to connect pipe, tube, and hose components and, depending on their design, influence the flow of fluid through the system. For sanitary process equipment and systems, sanitary fittings—also sometimes referred to as hygienic fittings—are vital.
In contrast to standard fittings, sanitary fittings demonstrate superior cleanability, either by dismantling or clean-in-place (CIP) methods. They are designed and constructed to minimize the number and sizes of areas where contaminants can collect in the system and withstand the regular cleaning operations required to ensure the maintenance of sanitary conditions. Some of the common features found in sanitary fittings include:
- Stainless steel construction (generally 304 or 316L) or other specialty alloys such as Hastelloy or Titanium
- Minimum surface finish quality of 32 Ra (15–25 for biopharmaceutical applications)
- No threads, pockets, or tight radii (1.5 times the OD of the tube)
